In April of 2009 Dr. Paul E. Perito embarked on a five-day whirlwind surgical training tour of Australia. While there, he had the honor of training 16 surgeons and performing over a dozen implants. He says that while the trip was hectic at times, the opportunity to educate surgeons on updated penile implant techniques is an experience he’ll never forget.
The first day in Australia, Dr. Paul E. Perito maneuvered between three hospitals, performing four implant procedures and training five physicians. After the clinicals were complete, he was expected at a urology forum in downtown Sydney. Dr. Paul E. Perito almost didn’t make it in time. There was a major blackout and traffic was at a standstill with police instructing people to vacate the roads.
The following morning Dr. Paul E. Perito and his team met with the state medical board to finalize registration. Later that day, the visiting professor had the opportunity to implant three Titan IPPs and provide hands-on experience to seven surgeons. The doctors all said that it was a valuable learning experience and were delighted to have trained with Dr. Paul E. Perito.
On the third day of the trip, Dr. Paul E. Perito held an additional conference in Perth for general practitioners to highlight current alternative options available for erectile dysfunction patients who may not respond well to chemical intervention. The conference was a success and had the highest turnout of his week down under. Perth is a very remote area, says Dr. Paul E. Perito, so many of the attending physicians may not otherwise have had access to an ED Specialist.
The last two days of Dr. Paul E. Perito’s trip to Australia provided him the opportunity to train with several other surgeons in Perth before he headed back to Sydney for a more complicated procedure. The final case in the country’s most populated city was a procedure intended to replace a previously implanted prosthesis, which had failed. According to Dr. Paul E. Perito, even as the science behind penile prosthesis continues to refine the procedure and equipment, the implant is a mechanical device and can fail like any other. However, studies have shown that between 90 and 95% of the implants are still functional at a decade postoperatively. When they do wear out, says Dr. Paul E. Perito, replacement may be necessary and the patient should seek a qualified specialist.
Dr. Paul E. Perito’s finally stop on his medical mission was Canberra, where he and a young surgeon had the opportunity to implant three of the Coloplast Titan OTR prostheses. He says he was impressed by the staff’s dedication to learn how to work together and their enthusiasm of employing a technique that reduces the patient’s time “on the table.”
After following up with the Australian surgeons, Dr. Paul E. Perito reports that many of them have since began to utilize The Perito Technique and have made the switch to the Coloplast Titan implant.
